Watching the Birds

Did you know there are more bugs than leaves? There are actually a lot more bugs if you are counting the microscopic ones. I heard one time that if you dig up some dirt, there are more bugs that stars in the sky. Well anyway there are about a nano million on earth and that is 10 with 30 zeros...

How aware are you of all this? Do you ever just sit and watch the clouds and the birds in the sky?

The other morning, I was walk/running along the San Marcos River trail and this huge owl came out of nowhere and attacked a hawk sitting in the tree. Normally, while the birds are squawking and flying around, like most of us I ignore them. But lately I have been trying to be more aware of the birds and everything around me.

While I was walking and these birds were fighting, I took a moment to just watch and try to figure out what they were doing. The owl flew over and swooped the hawk one more time, then flew back to his tree. The hawk kept squawking and then, one of his buddies flew over and perched on the light pole. I waited for a few more minutes and did not see the owl come back to attack. Then I was thinking what in the heck is the owl still doing up as the sun was coming up...

Later the same day I was getting gas, and someone had spilled nuts on the ground. There were already a bunch of birds hovering around the spilled nuts. Again, I took a moment to watch them. There was one that was brave and ran right up and got a nut (they can only eat one at a time). Then there was a scrappy one that chased the other away and stayed near the nuts for a while. Although it seemed he had a bit harder time getting a nut to stay in his mouth. Then a couple of other birds came into to steal the nuts the scrappy one had dropped.

So in the few seconds I was watching these birds at the gas station, I saw an example of peaking order and different personalities. It would have been interesting to see how long it would have taken and the drama of them finishing the nuts.

Hey, NicktothePLUS, why in the heck are you talking about birds?

I guess when you have been through life altering events, such as, losing a loved one, moving, getting married, having a new baby in the family... You kind of step back sometimes and learn to appreciate the small stuff, like birds and then realize the magic of life, the earth we live in and all the possibilities.

In some sense there are so many crazy things going on in our world today, it is calm and gift to just watch the world around you sometime to reach some sort of sanity.

Give it a try and tell me what you see and think!
